January is School Board Appreciation Month!

Horry County Schools joins school districts throughout the state to celebrate School Board Recognition Month each January. The theme of this year’s celebration, “School Boards: Locally Owned and Operated Since Forever,” reinforces the roles and responsibilities of school boards and the ownership they take for governing their local public schools. They are elected by local communities to represent their voice and vision for their public schools.

The members of the Horry County Board of Education develop policies and make decisions on complex educational and social issues impacting the entire community. They bear responsibility for a consolidated annual budget of more than $550 million. As the third largest school district in South Carolina, HCS has 40,341 students and is the county’s largest employer with 5,400 educators and support personnel. HCS is composed of nine attendance areas, 51 schools, and more than seven million square feet of facilities.
