College Application events offer high school seniors
assistance in completing applications
School guidance counselors and college admissions personnel are teaming up throughout South Carolina to offer high school seniors assistance in completing college applications during College Application Month sponsored by the South Carolina Commission on Higher Education.
The goal of this initiative is to provide a forum for high school seniors to complete and file college applications while receiving the assistance and resources they need to successfully access higher education.
A kick-off event was held at Myrtle Beach High School on September 23. The following is a list of remaining College Application events in Horry County School’s secondary programs and schools.
September 24 and 25: HCS Early College High School, 8 a.m. - 2 p.m. on September 24, and 11 a.m. - 2:20 p.m. on September 25;
September 26: St James High School, beginning at 8:30 a.m.;
September 30: Loris High School, beginning at 10 a.m.;
October 1: Socastee High School, beginning at 8:30 a.m.;
October 1: HCS Scholars Academy, beginning at 12 noon;
October 2: Aynor High School, beginning at 8:30 a.m.;
October 22: Horry County Schools Adult Education- Myrtle Beach Family Learning Center, beginning at 9 a.m.;
October 23: Horry County Schools Adult Education - Conway Education Center, beginning at 10 a.m.;
October 31: North Myrtle Beach High School, beginning at 8:30 a.m.;
November 5: Green Sea Floyds High School beginning at 8 a.m.; and
November 7: Carolina Forest High School, beginning at 8 a.m.

Deadline for military opt-out list for recruiters
Written notice required by Oct. 30 to opt-out of list for military recruiters
Under the No Child Left Behind Act and the National Defense Authorization Act, military recruiters are entitled to receive the names, addresses, and telephone numbers of juniors and seniors in high school. If military recruiters are to be denied access to a student’s directory information, parents/guardians must provide written notification that specifically states that military access is to be denied for their child.
If you wish to deny the military access to your child’s information, please express your wishes in writing no later than October 30. You may fax your request to 843 488-6779, send it via email to sjohnson@horrycountyschools.net, mail it to the Horry County Schools’ Office of Accountability & Information at P.O. Box 260005, Conway, SC 29528-6005 or complete the form below. Directory information will be released to military recruiters on or about November 1.

Free GED practice tests available through Adult Education
September 22 through October 3, Conway and Myrtle Beach
HCS Adult Education is giving away free GED practice tests to all students who visit the Conway Education Center or Myrtle Beach Family Learning Center from September 22 through October 3. Students can “See For Free” and take the GED Ready practice test between 1:00 and 4:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday at Conway Education Center, 1601 Sherwood Drive, or Myrtle Beach Family Learning Center, 3101 Oak Street. A Saturday test will be given from 1:00 to 4:00 on September 27.
The new “See for Free” program is designed to help students determine if they are ready to take and pass the official GED test. If not, the practice test will highlight which skills they need to work on to pass the test, and Horry County Schools Adult Education will offer personalized study plans. Students will also learn about other classes and resources such as earning a Work Keys career readiness certificate, preparing for college, and computer literacy skills.
Space is limited for the free practice tests and students are encouraged to register early. To register or for more information, students may call Adult Education at 843-488-6200 or visit http://hcae.horrycountyschools.net.

Child Development (Pre-Kindergarten) July Registration details
Summer Child Development Registration:
Applications for the
Child Development Program are taken at the school in your attendance
area. Children must be four years old on or before September 1 of the
current school year.
All Applications Must Include: completed registration form, copy of the child's birth certificate, copy of child's current immunization status, proof of income, proof of residence (utility bill, lease agreement, etc.), and copy of the child's Medicaid card (if applicable). Registration is held for the upcoming school year each spring AND late registration is held in late July. Please locate the school in your child’s attendance and follow the application process. This is the last district wide registration and screening we will hold for CD the 2014-2015 school year.

Summer Reading iMovie Wanted!
We are looking for a student-produced iMovie video to run on the district’s summer reading webpage this summer to help promote summer reading. Teachers can submit student entries by May 30th and the winning video will be featured on our district website all summer. Here are the guidelines:
The iMovie must be a student original and consist of the student’s own work. (Students may collaborate).
The iMovie must be between 1 to 3 minutes long.
The iMovie should positively promote summer reading.
Students should be very creative.
The teacher of the winning student will receive a Kagan gift bag valued at $100. This opportunity is not mandatory.

HCS Middle and High School students planning on participating in interscholastic athletics during the 2014-15 school year must have a pre-participation physical on file in their high school's athletic office/athletic training room before they can participate in practices and games. Physicals for the 2014-15 school year are valid from April 1, 2014 - June 30, 2015. Students and parents are encouraged to obtain a physical as soon as possible in anticipation of the upcoming sports seasons. Forms are available through your school's athletic training room or may be accessed here.

River Read's Poetry Slam
Several HCS high school students are currently competing in River Read 2014's Poetry Slam competition. They're currently competing in the second round, which is taking place on YouTube.
As part of River Read’s Poetry Slam competition, students attended a workshop with CCU's PEACE club and performed in a poetry showcase at the university. Those performances are now on YouTube and the students are looking to get likes for their videos. You can view the videos in the playlist embedded below.
The three performers whose videos receive the most likes by midnight April 9 will be invited to slam on Center Stage in front of a much bigger audience and a panel of judges from PEACE, which will host the final slam and perform!

Catch Shrek the Musica and Fame the Musical, opening this week!

Based on the Oscar® winning DreamWorks film, the musical brings the hilarious story of everyone's favorite ogre, Shrek to dazzling new life on the stage. A faraway kingdom is turned upside down when an unseemly ogre, not a handsome prince, shows up to rescue a feisty princess. Throw in a donkey who won't shut up, a bad guy with a short temper, a cookie with an attitude and over a dozen other fairy tale creatures and you have entertainment for all ages.
The musical is directed by Farrah Beaudry, Socastee High School Choral Director and Matt Hayward, Socastee High School Drama Director. “Our amazingly talented cast and crew work literally, day and night to bring a stellar show to the stage.” stated Ms. Beaudry. Socastee’s Performing Arts department continues to grow and excel, receiving national accolades. With a cast and crew of nearly 100, the production showcases the thriving Performing Arts program.
Continuing the tradition of outstanding productions such as Tarzan, Legally Blonde and Seussical the Musical, Socastee Performing Arts continues to lead the way in high school theater.

ST. JAMES HIGH SCHOOL PRESENTS FAME, THE MUSICAL
The theatre department of St. James high school will hold performances of Fame, the Musical beginning this week.
Performances will be held at 7 pm on Thursday 3/6, Friday 3/7, Saturday 3/8, and Tuesday, 3/11.
A matinee will also be held on Saturday 3/8 at 2 pm.
